Cosmetic Dentistry in Langford
Creating Beautiful Smiles For Life!
The dental industry has seen incredible progress in recent years, from the early days of tooth removal without the assistance of anesthetics, to modern pain-controlled dentistry. Today, dentists are concerned with resolving systemic illnesses and infections and limiting the impact of dental caries and other health issues like periodontitis on their patient’s oral health.
Developments in dentistry now mean that not all procedures are lifesaving or concerned with the mechanical function of the teeth and bite. Today, cosmetic dentistry sees more and more clients who are interested in elective procedures to improve the appearance of their smile. These processes have given many people back their sense of confidence and allowed them to step boldly into social settings. With cosmetic dentistry, more people are loving what they see in the mirror. Whether it’s crooked, damaged or stained teeth, the cosmetic dental industry has solutions to offer. Ranging from minimally invasive, like tooth whitening, to more involved processes such as veneers, crowns and implants.

Tooth Whitening
Tooth whitening is among the most requested cosmetic dentistry procedures and is concerned with restoring the natural shade of visible teeth in the mouth. The colour of our natural teeth is primarily determined by the amount of dentin that is visible through the transparent enamel layer.
Your dentist can offer in-office or take-home whitening kits, which are peroxide based. Peroxide penetrates the enamel of the tooth and acts upon the inner layer (dentin) causing a bleaching effect. The primary difference between at-home and in-office tooth whitening is in the relative strength of the peroxide concentration. Because dental offices use higher peroxide solutions, effects are seen more quickly than when done at home. In the dental office, your dentist or assistant will paint a protective layer over the gum tissue to minimize tissue irritation.
There are many whitening products currently available on the market, but only your dentist can provide whitening products at clinical strengths. If you have tried whitening processes at home with limited success or too much discomfort, talk to your dental team about the various whitening options available to you. A customized approach to your particular needs may be what is needed to get your smile looking whiter and brighter.
Dental Crowns
In cases of severe damage such as a crack or decay, dental crowns may be the best option to retain the health and structure of your natural tooth. Your dentist may suggest a dental crown to seal off the tooth, protect it against further damage and improve its appearance. Crowns are generally constructed of a porcelain material (the strongest we have next to metals). A crown is a prosthetic tooth which fits over the entire surface of the prepared natural tooth. The tooth is prepared to receive the crown by etching and reshaping it, generally while under local anesthetic.
Once the tooth is prepared, a temporary crown has been cemented to the prepared tooth and worn until a permanent crown has been produced in a lab. The temporary crown has been used to cover the tooth and protect it from hot and cold stimulus that could otherwise cause discomfort.
At Parkway Dental, we are pleased to offer our patients crowns in a single appointment in some cases. Thanks to digital design technology, you can skip the temporary crown entirely, having your final crown designed and fitted in one appointment. The final product is placed over the entire surface of the tooth above the gum line, in a custom shade that matches its neighbours for a seamless result.

Bridges & Veneers
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are used to ‘bridge’ the gap caused by one or more missing teeth. Bridging consists of installing prosthetic teeth (called pontics) in place of natural teeth, and adhering them to adjacent natural teeth, crowns or implants for support. This procedure serves to restore a complete smile, as well as prevent adjacent teeth from migrating out of place and helps with chewing and even distribution of chewing forces across the jaw bone.
Veneers
If you have chipping, discoloration or damage to a tooth, your dentist may recommend a dental veneer. Dental veneers are made of porcelain and are secured over the outer visible surface of the tooth. Using a dental resin, the veneer is cured to the tooth after etching away some of the enamel. The veneer bonds to the prepared surface of the tooth and protects it from further damage. Veneers are known to be strong and to resist staining, but they are not stronger than your natural enamel. For this reason, conditions such as bruxism (night time clenching or grinding of the teeth) may contraindicate this procedure or require a custom night guard to prevent damage to the veneer by strong grinding forces. Veneers can change the shape, size and colour of your tooth leaving you with an aesthetically improved smile.
