Convenient, Clear & Removable!

Traditional braces have been around for a long time and they’ve worked well to correct malocclusion, or crooked teeth for years. Braces however require significant self-care efforts to ensure that decay and plaque are well controlled within the mouth.

When your teeth are crooked or crowded, cleaning those teeth becomes more difficult because edges don’t line up nicely and can make it difficult to access all sides of the tooth. If it’s difficult to clean debris and plaque from between teeth, it can eventually turn to tartar. Adding traditional braces to crooked tooth surfaces can make hard-to-clean teeth harder to clean until they are brought into alignment.

Patients undergoing Invisalign® therapy are encouraged to wear their aligners a minimum of 22 hours a day. Aligners are removed when drinking and eating and teeth should be brushed and flossed before replacing the aligners. This means that patients who wear Invisalign® aligners often experience an improvement in tooth and gum health and often become more intentional about their eating habits. Removing the aligners to have a drink of sugary cola requires that the teeth be cleaned before replacing the aligners. With removable Invisalign® aligners, flossing your teeth during treatment is as easy as it always has been, and becomes easier as the teeth move into proper alignment.

Appearance

Traditional braces are made of metal, something to be considered when deciding whether the crooked teeth are impacting your life enough to warrant several years with an altered appearance. For many patients, Invisalign® is a new way to correct the mechanics of your bite and alignment of your teeth without the appearance of metal braces.

Invisalign® aligners are transparent, making them nearly invisible when worn over the teeth. Their sleek design means that the profile of the lips remains virtually unchanged while wearing the aligners.

Changing Your Diet

With the introduction of metal braces into the mouth, there is far more opportunity for some foods to become lodged in the brackets. Hard foods can cause brackets to become dislodged from the teeth. Abstaining from the following foods becomes important when wearing metal braces: chewy foods like bagels or gummies, crunchy foods like popcorn or chips, gum, toffee and anything that requires that you bite into it, like apples or corn.

Invisalign® is a revolutionary way to achieve correct tooth alignment without the commitment required to maintain a traditional corrective system. The Invisalign® system is a series of custom-fit aligners which are worn over the teeth and can be removed at any time. This means that patients undergoing Invisalign® therapy can continue to enjoy a wide variety of foods, without worrying about damaging the aligners.

Convenient & Comfortable

Metal braces can cause discomfort for several days after each adjustment, while teeth adjust to their new positioning. This is also to be expected throughout the alignment process. Additional discomfort, however, can develop where lips, cheeks and the tongue are interfacing with the wire and brackets, causing tenderness. While dental wax can offer a cushion between the braces and the soft tissues, the process of cleaning and maintaining braces on top of regular intervals of discomfort can cause some people, whose alignment problems aren’t impacting their health or social lives, to abstain from having their teeth aligned.

Invisalign® aligners are intended to be changed every few weeks to correct your teeth gradually over time. Although some discomfort may be felt, adjustments in aligners are so incremental that patients generally report less discomfort with Invisalign® than with traditional orthodontic appliances. A typical Invisalign® client would use between 20 and 30 aligners over a number of months to complete the alignment process.

How to Determine Whether You Are a Candidate for Invisalign®

In order to determine whether you are a good candidate for Invisalign® therapy, you can begin with a dialogue with your dentist. Your dentist will likely begin the process by taking 3-dimensional images (X-rays) of your teeth and jaw. These images allow dentists to understand the placement of the teeth from all angles in order to produce a simulation of hypothetical end results.

Once your dentist has completed the evaluation and determines that you are a good candidate for Invisalign® therapy, you are nearly done. Your three-dimensional X-rays have collected all the information required for your custom set of aligners to be constructed; they can be sent off to the lab.

Who May Not Be A Candidate for Invisalign®?

While Invisalign® has proven to be effective for treating mild to moderate tooth gaps, crowding, over or underbites and crossbites, cases of severe malocclusion may need to be corrected traditionally. Other factors considered include whether or not your teeth and jaw have finished growing, and how conscientiously you can maintain your Invisalign® therapy.  Although Invisalign® aligners do have the benefit of being both transparent and removable, the chances of misplacing an aligner while eating does increase as a result. Good candidates for Invisalign® therapy are adults with fully developed teeth who can commit to a regimented program of brushing and flossing after each, and every meal to prevent food and debris from contributing to plaque accumulation and tooth decay while wearing the aligners.
